Report a Problem

Commissioner's Office of Human Rights, Equity & Accessibility Department Logo

At Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, we take concerns seriously. To support our mission of success and wellbeing for all, we have developed Report IT! - a new online tool that allows any member of the Board community to report an issue of concern.

We value the diversity, uniqueness, dignity and humanity of all students, employees, family and community members. Together, we all have an important role in fostering safe, inclusive, anti-discriminatory and welcoming learning and working environments. Along with the new Report IT! tool, we also continue to encourage students, staff and families to address concerns directly with those involved, such as a teacher or the principal, when possible.

Report IT! is a confidential online tool, to report issues of concern, including:

• Discrimination and harassment;

• Bullying, threats, targeting and intimidation;

• Failure to accommodate; and,

• Other issues negatively affecting student well-being.

Bullying

Bullying is defined as typically a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person's body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance.

Students may attain or maintain power over others in the school through real or perceived differences. Some areas of differences may be size, strength, age, intelligence, economic status, social status, solidarity of peer group, religion, ethnicity, disability, need for special education, sexual orientation, family circumstances, gender and race.

Discrimination

Discrimination is an action or a decision that treats a person or group badly for reasons such as their race, age or disability. These reasons, also called grounds, are protected under the Canadian Human Rights Act, and the Ontario Human Rights Code.

The Ontario Rights Code prohibits actions that discriminate against people based on the following grounds:

  • Age
  • Ancestry, colour, race
  • Citizenship
  • Ethnic origin
  • Place of origin
  • Creed (such as religion)
  • Disability
  • Family status
  • Marital status (including single status)
  • Gender identity, gender expression
  • Receipt of public housing assistance
  • Record of offences (in employment only)
  • Sex (including pregnancy and breastfeeding)
  • Sexual orientation

Ideally, students or parents should contact their teacher and school principal to report and resolve the incident first. However, we recognize that some people may not feel comfortable reporting bullying and discrimination directly to their school staff. To help ease this anxiety, students and parents are welcome to use the Report IT form. The information provided will be forwarded to the appropriate school principal for action. You may report an incident anonymously if you wish, but we do need to know where and when the incident took place, in order to respond to the situation.
