International and Indigenous Language Program
Elementary Program
The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board runs the International and Indigenous Languages Elementary (IILE) Program for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 who are interested in the opportunity to develop their language skills through a free, non-credit course outside of school hours.
International Language instructors focus on the development of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing with an emphasis on oral language development. These classes are ideally taught by International Languages Instructors.
Thank you everyone for your patience with the coordination of this year’s International & Indigenous Languages Elementary Program. Our registration extension saw us reach over 400 registrations across the three KPR regions!
Based on registrations received, we are excited to offer the following languages in-person in Clarington:
-
- Hindi
- Mandarin
- Spanish
- Tamil
Unfortunately, we did not receive enough registrations for any single language in Northumberland or Peterborough, though our registration numbers do permit us to offer the following programs virtually:
-
- Arabic
- Spanish
Anyone enrolled in a virtual course will need to have access to reliable internet and a device that will allow them to use Microsoft Teams. These things are not provided by the board for home use during IILE.
All registrants for Arabic will be automatically enrolled in the virtual course, and all Spanish registrants from Northumberland and Peterborough will be automatically enrolled in the virtual program. Registrants for Spanish in Clarington will be scheduled according to their indicated preference on the registration form.
If you signed up for a language that is not offered but would like to join one of the courses that is being offered either in-person in Clarington or virtually, please click this link to update your preference for your child(ren). Please also use this link if you missed our registration window but are interested in having your child(ren) learn one of the languages we are offering.
Our next step is to seek out qualified instructors for these courses. Postings for these positions will go live on Indeed the week of November 25th. We are aiming for a start date of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, and classes would run each Tuesday from 4:30-6pm until Tuesday, April 28, 2026 (no classes during March Break).
Please watch for updates on the IILE webpage, KPR social media, your child(ren)’s school newsletters, and your inbox/spam! We look forward to watching your children learn and grow in our IILE language classrooms.
