Updates for Families: June 9, 2025

Dear KPR families,

June is such a busy and exciting time of year with many important academic activities, extracurricular events and meaningful opportunities, which we hope will be remembered by students for many years to come. KPR staff gladly support this work, and we appreciate the significant involvement and support of families and volunteers.

We continue to monitor air quality from wildfire smoke, which has made its way to our area. We are following Environment Canada recommendations and have connected with local public health representatives.  Our thoughts are with those impacted by the wildfires and we are hopeful that the conditions will improve soon.

As a school board we continue to work through the process to finalize a budget for the next school year. As part of next steps, administration is presenting a balanced budget to the Board of Trustees for consideration beginning at the Budget Committee meeting on June 9.

In June, we recognize National Indigenous History Month as an opportunity for students and staff to engage in holistic learning and reflection about Indigenous cultures, perspectives and histories. Students and staff continue to build on the important work that has taken place throughout the school year, supporting a deeper understanding of past, current and future experiences of all Indigenous peoples in Canada.

We also celebrate Pride Month in June! As a symbol of our commitment to creating inclusive, identity-affirming learning and working environments for 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities, the Pride flag will be flown outside all KPR schools and education centres throughout June.  While Pride month is an intentional time, schools embrace opportunities to educate, promote acceptance and reaffirm values of equity, diversity and inclusivity all year round.

We extend our best wishes to all those in local communities who observed Eid ul-Adha on the weekend. For information about days of significance, such as National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, please visit KPR’s Events Calendar.

All my best wishes in the coming weeks,

Rita Russo
Director of Education

STSCO Busing Opt-in Period for 2025-2026 School Year

Student Transportation Services of Central Ontario (STSCO), which oversees busing in Peterborough, Northumberland and Clarington, will be continuing the “opt-in” program for next school year. The opt-in program requires families to confirm their children’s intent to ride the school bus if they are eligible for transportation. Messaging about opting-in was shared directly by STSCO with all eligible families.

For more information on the opt-in process, visit the STSCO website.

Grade 9 Transition Day

To support a smooth and positive transition for Grade 9 students, the first day of the 2025-2026 school year, (Tuesday, September 2), will be a Grade 9 Transition Day – to welcome students, allow them to visit their classrooms, meet school staff, and participate in activities to familiarize themselves with their new school environment.

On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, only Grade 9 students and Learning and Life Skills (LLS) students will be in attendance. Students in Grades 10 to 12 will not attend unless they are invited to support as part of a student leadership group. Regular classes for students in Grades 10 to 12 next year, will begin on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

As secondary schools continue to make plans for this day, they will update families with additional details. Please direct any questions to your school’s administration.
