Clarke HS, The Pines Senior PS and Community Come Together for Wellness!
Yoga poses, deep breathing, hydration stations, cuddles from furry friends and other wellness activities were all part of the Clarke High School’s first Wellness Fair on May 1st!
Leading up to Canadian Mental Health Week, which takes place annually during the first week of May, a committee of Clarke HS students worked with Amanda Langille, CYW and Taylor Gilbank, Public Health Nurse, to organize an event in support of mental health and wellness.
The morning featured information booths from partners like Durham Regional Police, Clarington Recreation Centre, Sunshine Therapy Dogs, Public Health and more – to help connect students with supports and resources in the community, while learning more about their own health and well-being in a fun environment. There were also tasty treats for everyone to enjoy, including egg bites and brownies made by students in Clarke’s Grade 9 and 10 Family Studies class as well as hot-crossed buns provided by the local Cobb’s Bakery!
The event was a big success, with about 300 students from Clarke HS and the Pines Senior PS attending. Students were given a “Passport”, to collect stamps and enter draws for prizes donated by local business partners. This encouraged them to visit each community partner and activity where they could ask questions, gather information, and engage with peers.
“The whole team at Clarke, including The Pines @ Clarke were grateful to receive support, participation, and celebration from KPR’s Senior Leadership team, especially Family of Schools Superintendent, Sonal Gohil,” shares Amanda Langille, CYW.
“Students expressed appreciation for learning more about what is offered within our local community and we’re all looking forward to our next adventure in Wellness!”
