Summer School 2021

This year summer school courses will be offered through eLearning with face to face learning as an option if Ontario Public Health approves it.  In online courses students will continue to read, work independently or as a member of a group, complete assignments and interact with their classmates and teacher. While students should plan to spend a minimum of 6-8 hours per weekday on their eLearning course, they will have some flexibility to choose when they work during the day, as long as they meet course due dates and times. Each course is facilitated by a teacher who establishes the timing of how the class works through the course material, in part to encourage collaboration and enable effective feedback. Students are encouraged to establish routines that will support this.

All classes are conditional upon sufficient enrolment and are subject to cancellation. You will be contacted by KPRDSB staff if a course is cancelled by the weekend of July 2nd

Please Note: Pending future announcements from the Ministry of Education and Public Health offices, Summer School program offerings and schedules may change.  Please visit the KPRDSB’s web site on a regular basis for any updates regarding programs and registration.

Summer START! Program for Grade 8s

Summer START! Program Update

We have confirmed that this year’s Summer START program for Grade 8s going into Grade 9 will take place at a distance, from July 5-30th.  Students will be working towards a credit called, Learning Strategies: Skills for Success in Secondary School (GLE 2O).  Throughout the course, students will further develop their literacy, numeracy, and self-advocacy skills to help prepare them for success in high school.  A school board psychologist will also host seminars focused on mental wellness each week. Successful completion will count as a credit on the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

All work will be done under the same parameters that are in place for distance learning now.  That means students will be expected to be available and engaged with classroom activities each day, during the regular school day (8:30am - 2:30pm). Similar to when your child attends in person, we ask that appointments and other activities, such as part time jobs, be scheduled after 2:30pm.

Learning will continue to involve a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning for all students. Synchronous learning refers to real-time teaching when the students and teacher are connected live, while asynchronous education would involve online posting of resources that can be completed by the student independently. Students will be expected to participate in both types of learning and to complete and submit work to their teacher for evaluation.
