Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition

Learners who are already 18 or older or who turn 18 in the current school year may be eligible for an assessment which may allow credits for learning completed outside of school.

Graduation Requirements

  • 30 credits (based on current OSSD requirements)
  • Successful completion of the Literacy Test or Ontario Literacy Course
  • 40 hours community service

How does PLAR work?

Learners can obtain credit by following two processes:

  1. Junior PLAR and/or
  2.  Senior PLAR

Up to 26 credits can be earned through PLAR; however, learners must take the final 4 senior credits to obtain their OSSD.

What is Junior PLAR and how does it work?

Students who require Grade 9 and 10 credits receive support preparing for and then writing a series of assessments which can result in a maximum of 16 credits. There are 5 assessments that a learner can write:  English, math, science, geography and history.  Students may not be required to write all 5 assessments but can earn up to 4 credits for each assessment written.

There are resources available to aid a learner in preparing for the PLAR assessments should learners require this support. Instructional support is also available through the Adult Training Network (ATN) if students are not credit/PLAR ready.

Credits granted through this process are authorized by the Principal.

What is Senior PLAR and how does it work?

Once a student has completed Junior PLAR, they can earn up to 10 more credits through the Senior PLAR process. This process involves creating a portfolio to highlight their learning that has occurred outside of school (e.g. through being a parent, running a business, renting or owning a car or house).  Support is also available to help learners complete their Senior PLAR.

Learners must complete an application that will assess prior learning - learning that has occurred outside of the classroom. Staff will then support the learner to pull together evidence of that learning and to reflect on the learning that occurred.
