Ganaraska Trail Accommodation Planning

February 23, 2022

Dear Families,

A couple of weeks ago we shared information about the enrollment pressures at Ganaraska Trail PS, and the recommended solution to support our school community.

At last night’s Board meeting, Trustees approved the recommendation that effective September 2022, Ganaraska Trail PS will become a JK-5 dual track (English and French Immersion) school while Dr. M.S. Hawkins Senior PS will expand to become a dual track Grade 6-8 Intermediate School.

Students who would have moved to Dr. Hawkins for Grade 7, will move one year earlier. Those students currently in Grade 5 at Ganaraska Trail PS, will enter Grade 6 at Dr. Hawkins in September 2022.

Copies of the previous communications shared with families, a Question and Answer document and other relevant information is posted on the Ganaraska Trail PS Accommodation web page, accessible from the home page of www.kprschools.ca .

We will be seeking input from Grade 5 students/families regarding a variety of transition activities (e.g. tour of the new school, meeting new staff, etc.).  We will also be seeking input from all students/families next year regarding our long-term accommodation plan for Ganaraska Trail PS.

While change can be difficult, we believe this is the best available option for our students and each of the school communities impacted.

We will continue to share updates in the coming weeks as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Troy MacKenzie, Principal

February 11, 2022 - Ganaraska Trail PS Update: Question and Answer Document

As you know, to respond to enrollment pressures and insufficient space to accommodate portables, senior administration is proposing that effective September 2022, Ganaraska Trail PS will become a JK-5 dual track (English and French Immersion) school while Dr. M.S. Hawkins Senior PS will expand to become a dual track Grade 6-8 Intermediate School.

This proposal will be brought to Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board Trustees at February 22, 2022 Regular Board meeting.

If approved, a transition committee involving students, families and staff will be established at Ganaraska Trail PS to support transition planning and a variety of transition activities as part of this change, including tours of the new school and meeting with teachers and staff

Since sharing this news with the school community, some common questions have been shared.

We will continue to update this document as needed.

February 1st, 2022

Dear Families,

We have important news to share about the growth of our school and some potential changes that may take place this September. We are pleased that our school enrolment continues to grow, however this also creates challenges in having enough space for all our students.

As a district, Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board uses projections and planning to manage growth and accommodation pressures. Significant growth and development throughout the district over the last few years, the impact of the pandemic, and limited opportunities for new capital to build schools, have all impacted our immediate options.  As a result, maximizing the use of space within our schools, adding portable buildings, or moving programs to create available space become our only short-term solutions. For further information, the Kawartha Pine Ridge Long-Term Accommodation Plan can be viewed at: https://www.kprschools.ca/en/our_board/resources/longtermaccommodationplan/accommodation.html

Ganaraska Trail PS will no longer be able to accommodate the expected enrolment in its current JK-6 configuration.

As a result of these enrollment pressures and insufficient space to accommodate portables, KPRDSB Senior Administration is proposing that effective September 2022, Ganaraska Trail PS will become a JK-5 dual track (English and French Immersion) school while Dr. M.S. Hawkins Senior PS will expand to become a dual track Grade 6-8 Intermediate School.  This proposal will be shared with Trustees at the upcoming Resource Committee meeting on February 2, 2022, with a final decision on this proposal scheduled for the February 22, 2022 Regular Board meeting.

Students who would currently move to Dr. Hawkins for Grade 7, would move one year earlier. Those students currently in Grade 5 at Ganaraska Trail PS, would enter Grade 6 at Dr. Hawkins in September 2022.

If we move forward with this proposal, we will be seeking input from Grade 5 students/families regarding a variety of transition activities (e.g. tour of the new school, meeting new staff, etc.).  We will also be seeking input from all students/families next year regarding our long-term accommodation plan for Ganaraska Trail PS.

While we appreciate that change can be difficult, we are confident that managing accommodation pressure in this manner is the best available option for our students and each of the school communities impacted.

A copy of this letter and other relevant information will be posted on the Ganaraska Trail PS Accommodation web page, accessible from the home page of www.kprschools.ca.

Thank you for your understanding and commitment to our school community. We hope that you and your family are doing well during these challenging times.

Sincerely,

Troy MacKenzie, Principal
