Note: New applications from external researchers to conduct research in KPRDSB schools have been suspended for the 2020-2021 school year.
The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board supports educational research through its Research Advisory Committee. Investigators wishing to conduct research studies in KPR schools must submit a formal Application to Conduct Research, which is available in Microsoft Word and PDF formats.
Requests received from individuals and/or organizations are reviewed by the Research Advisory Committee to evaluate the relevance of the topic and the design of the study (i.e. appropriate qualitative or quantitative procedures; alignment of proposed analysis with research question; consistency with Board policies and priorities).
The protection of staff and students is also carefully evaluated to ensure appropriate participant information and consent is in place; to determine the clarity of expectations for staff and / or student time; to evaluate potential disruption to school programs and to ensure the proposed study is free from sensitive or offensive items, free from racist, sexist, religious or other bias and that participants are free from mental and physical discomfort or harm.
The Research Advisory Committee has the responsibility of initial approval of studies and communicates its decisions directly to the applicants and to the appropriate Superintendent and Principal. Studies approved by the Research Advisory Committee can be conducted in a KPR school (or schools) only with the complete agreement of the Superintendent(s) and Principal(s) involved. Staff, students and parents also have the right to decide if they wish to participate.
The Guidelines for Educational Research in KPR Schools are posted here: Guidelines for Ed Research rev2010
Complete KPR application forms and all relevant attachments can be submitted by email (preferred) or by fax or regular mail to the contact information provided below. Applications must be received 10 calendar days in advance of a meeting of the KPR Research Advisory Committee in order to be included on a meeting agenda.
The following dates are when the Research Advisory Committee will be meeting:
There are no scheduled meeting dates of the Committee in the 2020-2021 school year.
If rare exceptions are made to consider a longitudinal study of student mental health, or proposed research that is highly relevant to the nature of education as it is in 2020-2021, the Committee will meet on an ad hoc basis.
