New Northglen School
May 23, 2023 Update:
Boundary Review and Construction Timelines Update – Northglen Neighbourhood School
As part of the Resource Committee Report, administration shared plans to begin a boundary review in the next school year as part of ongoing planning for a new elementary school in Bowmanville.
Administration also updated the Board with revised timelines for completion of the new school. Initially slated to open in September 2024, the targeted completion date has been moved to 2025, with an expected full occupancy by September 2025.
Administration identified challenges in the current construction environment for capital projects, including access to labour and materials, as the reason for the changed timeline.
Located in the Northglen neighbourhood, the $19.9 million school is being built as part of a new provincial building pilot project with the Ministry of Education and Infrastructure Ontario, and will include 769-pupil places, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8, as well as a four-room childcare centre.
“While we are disappointed in this change to the construction schedule, and the delay in completing this greatly needed new school for the community, we are hopeful that plans can continue moving forward without further adjustment,” says Jaine Klassen Jeninga, Vice-chairperson, Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.
Beginning in September, 2023, there will be a series of in-person and online engagement opportunities for community feedback on school boundary adjustments to help alleviate ongoing enrolment pressures within the community.
“Our boundary planning for the new school will be moving forward and we welcome feedback from families in the new school year as part of the next steps in making this new school a reality,” says Klassen Jeninga. “We expect to have further updates for the community on this project as this work continues.”
New Elementary School
The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board is pleased to be moving forward with construction of a new $19.9 million elementary school to serve students and families in the Northglen neighbourhood and surrounding Bowmanville area!
Highlights of the project include:
769 student spaces.
73 new licensed child-care spaces in four child-care rooms.
Design Visioning
To help us create a common vision for the design of the new school, we are working with Fielding International (fieldingintl.com), a team of architects and educators that specialize in Kindergarten to Grade 12 school design.
Fielding held focus group sessions with students, families and staff to provide input on some of the possible learning spaces and design features of the new school.
We invited parents/guardians and community partners in the Bowmanville area to join us on Thursday, May 26, 2022 to provide input on possible learning spaces and design features. Information from this meeting, and meetings with students and staff, has been shared with the design team.
