Interactive Video Conferencing in the Classroom

Video conferencing offers exciting possibilities for program delivery to students. Educators within Kawartha Pine Ridge have been developing lessons augmented through the use of Interactive Video Conferencing (IVC) technology since 2004. The Ministry of Education has made this possible through funding of equipment and release time for innovative teachers to develop the connections to institutions and individuals who can enrich student experiences in the classroom.

To date many exciting course related virtual field trips have been taken by our students to visit scientists and experts at the Canadian Space Agency and NASA. There have been virtual presenters on Global Climate Change and other timely topics including HIV, overpopulation and human rights.

Students have interacted with other classrooms nationally and internationally to discuss varying perspectives and views on issues that are important to their world. Teachers have received in-service training via video conferencing and developing collaborative classroom projects with other locations. Students find that the interaction facilitates meaningful and memorable connections with their learning.

Videoconferencing content providers and imaginative teachers will be taking our students to exiting destinations and introducing information from experts to inform them about their world. Educational resources will be available to our teachers to support their use of this emerging and powerful classroom learning tool.

Recently, we completed a Video Conferencing Pilot in Apsley Central Public School where Grade 2 students connected with other classes in Japan and Australia and discussed the lifestyle of individuals in Africa. Through this and other projects students are developing 21st century skills and attitudes that support classroom teachings, broden perspective, foster empathy and global citizenship.
