Champions for Youth - Overview
Champions for Youth is a community mentoring program for youth ages 12 to 17 who have had a "brush" with the law. The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board initiated this program to engage students who have had difficulties and are at risk of dropping out of school, to help them to succeed academically and socially.
Champions for Youth is built on the belief that all youth, particularly those 'at risk' benefit from a stable positive relationship with an adult. Youth, who have their own adult friend and mentor, will be in a better position to realize their full potential, set achieveable goals and be a contributing member of society.
School Board Counsellors, Community Police Officers and various community partners refer students for the Champions For Youth program based on their daily interactions. The youth involved are not serious offenders, but may display anti-social behaviour as a result of poor choices. These behaviour choices will likely improve with intervention, and the assistance of a positive mentor.
Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board is actively seeking mentors to participate in this program. Please see Mentor Information for more details on how to become a part of this rewarding experience.
