The following letter was sent home to all parents and guardians in the Crestwood Family of Schools, outlining the proposed changes.

October 10, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians, Crestwood Secondary Family of Schools:

As you may know, we have increasing enrolment pressures and student accommodation challenges in some schools within this area. As a result, we are reviewing changes to school structures within the Crestwood Secondary School catchment area.

Westmount Public School and Millbrook/South Cavan Public School are presently over capacity. James Strath Public School, presently at capacity, is projected to be above capacity by 2023. All schools are expected to continue to have consistent growth over the next ten years, with no further room for expansion at Westmount Public School.

To alleviate these accommodation pressures, administration is proposing the establishment of an intermediate school at Crestwood Secondary School.

As part of this proposal, Grade 7 and 8 students from the following schools would attend Crestwood Secondary School:

·         Kawartha Heights Public School,

·         Millbrook/South Cavan Public School,

·         North Cavan Public School, and

·         English stream students from Westmount Public School.

Grade 7 and 8 French Immersion students from Westmount Public School will attend Adam Scott Intermediate School, and James Strath Public School will remain a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school, at very close to capacity.

This plan is based, in part, on the following:

Easing Accommodation Pressures –The addition of Grades 7 and 8 to Crestwood Secondary School will better utilize available school space and relieve the enrollment pressures experienced by both Millbrook/South Cavan Public School and Westmount Public School. Crestwood Secondary School currently has space available to house these students.

Fewer Transitions for Students – Currently, students from Kawartha Heights Public School and North Cavan Public School transition to James Strath Public School for Grade 7 and 8, and then to secondary school. With the establishment of an intermediate school at Crestwood Secondary school, one of those transitions will be eliminated.

We shared this proposal for initial consideration by the Board, at the Resource Committee meeting last evening. We will now be discussing this plan with school communities, and gathering your feedback, over the next few months, prior to a final decision by the board tentatively scheduled for January, 2020.

We understand that this information represents a significant change for students and parents. We appreciate that you will have continued interest in this issue over the next few months, and we will be sharing more information soon on how you may share your input on our proposed plan.

Sincerely,

Peter Mangold

Superintendent of Education
